Thornbeck College

Thornbeck College is an Independent Specialist College providing personalised programmes to autistic and neurodivergent individuals

Working together to inspire, support, celebrate and equip autistic and neurodivergent people to fulfil their potential in life.

Following an initial visit during mental health awareness week learners visited St Clare’s court for the second time. On Monday 27th June 2022, learners from Thornbeck College were invited to participate in a 'Beach Party' being hosted for the residents. Learners from the college had prepared handwritten letters and cards, individually addressed to residents of St Clare's Court, these were packed ready to distribute.

Upon arrival at the home, the party was just getting started with non-alcoholic cocktails fruit kebabs; a sandy beach set up; a paddling pool and large flamingo inflatables. There were even hula skirts and cocktail umbrellas for good measure.  Residents gave a warm reception to the learners from Thornbeck, greeting them with waves and beckoning them over for conversation. Learners enjoyed mingling with the residents and giving out each handwritten card personally with a view to becoming pen pals in the future

The learners then made their way round to each resident to find out what future activities they would like the college to provide. Ideas ranged from music, to bingo and games and music. Learners will plan and deliver the session to the residents in the coming weeks during their planned weekly visits.

Supporting the learners to access the residential home has supported the development of their social communication skills and promoted community cohesion it has had a positive impact on their wellbeing.
