The Mackenzie Thorpe Centre is an independent specialist school based in South Bank, Redcar and Cleveland for pupils aged 5-19

Working together to inspire, support, celebrate and equip autistic and neurodiverse people to fulfil their potential in life.

Child Inventors Day is a celebration of the ingenuity and creativity of children. It is mainly celebrated in the USA but is starting to be recognised around the world.

The date of the 17th of January was chosen because it is the birthday of Benjamin Franklin. Franklin is famous for his many inventions, including the lightning rod, but did you know that he invented a swimming aid when he was just 12 years old?

At Mackenzie Thorpe centre, children have been learning about some famous inventions that were by children including earmuffs and Braille.

Children across school have been coming up with their own inventions, including a hacker torch that gets Roblox resources for your computer, a grabbing hand and a jet powered chair to move around school.

In post-14, pupils have been learning about famous inventors and thinking about how inventions have changed our world.
