Thornhill Park School

Thornhill Park School is an independent specialist school based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear for pupils aged 4-19

Our mission is to work together inspiring, supporting, celebrating and equipping autistic and neurodiverse children, young people and adults.

At Thornhill Park School, celebrating identities and differences is central as we understand that everybody’s mental health thrives when they feel included, cared for, supported and understood.

Children’s Mental Health Week - and its themes of 'Express Yourself' and 'Growing Together - was celebrated across the school by pupils and staff, who dressed in their most fun and comfortable clothes. This gave everybody the chance to show their personalities through their clothes.

Pupils also engaged in guided meditations, a recognition that taking time to be with ourselves and our emotions is crucial to maintain our mental health. They also listened to the story 'Lucy’s Blue Day', which explains depression in a light and simple way.

Afterwards, everybody created paper chains and held them together to represent how much stronger we feel when we go through difficult times together.

Pupils also took the time to reflect on what makes them happy and proud, as well as talk about what they are proud of others for.
