Thornbeck College is an Independent Specialist College providing personalised programmes to autistic and neurodivergent individuals

When he joined the college Aaron expressed an interest in a career in the construction industry and has since been enrolled on a Level 1 Employability Certificate with NOCN.

The units of the qualification have supported Aaron to explore different roles within the sector and he has taken a keen interest in building work.

Aaron accessed a two-day work experience placement with Ghent Building Contractors to carry out works on the college site to maintain and repair drains to the Sir Peter Vardy Enterprise Centre. 

During his two days of work experience Aaron helped to remove existing paving slabs, dig to the correct depth to locate drains, replace drains and install new Aco drains outside of the main entrance to prevent flooding and reinstate to make good of the surrounding area.

Aaron has since been able to complete the Work Experience unit of his qualification outlining the main structure and purpose of the business and his role during his placement. Aaron maintained exemplary behaviour and personal presentation and complied with safe working practices demanded by the work environment while carrying out tasks requested by his supervisor. 

The development of these skills has supported Aaron gain valuable work experience and build employability skills in preparation for future employment in the construction industry.
