Thornbeck College is an Independent Specialist College providing personalised programmes to autistic and neurodivergent individuals

Working together to inspire, support, celebrate and equip autistic and neurodivergent people to fulfil their potential in life.

From Monday 3rd June – Friday 7th June 2024, Thornbeck College has celebrated Volunteers Week.

Volunteers' Week is a chance to recognise, celebrate and thank the UK’s incredible volunteers for all they contribute to our local communities, the voluntary sector, and society as a whole. This is an annual celebration that takes place for one week starting on the first Monday of June every year. This year marks the 40th Anniversary of Volunteers Week.

Learners have celebrated Volunteers Week at Thornbeck by learning about the role of a volunteer and why they are important, as well as engaged in volunteering at a range of businesses including:

·        Haystax

·        Spennymoor Community Garden Allotments

·        Spennymoor Youth and Community Association Café

·        Stray Aid Charity Shop

·        St. Claire’s Court Care Home

·        The Food Bank

·        Shaw Trust Garden Centre

During these volunteering opportunities, learners contributed towards the day to day running of the businesses and took direction from a supervisor.

Learners also volunteered their time by engaging in activities such as:

·        Maintaining the courtyard for NEAS Short Breaks

·        Completing administration tasks with Thornbeck College Admin Team

·        Cleaning at New Warlands Farm Lodges and maintaining the surrounding area

·        Volunteering in the kitchen at New Warlands Farm

By participating in these activities, learners have been enabled to explore a range of different employment opportunities, understanding the roles and responsibilities within a range of different sectors. This has promoted learners' employability skills, providing them with tools that they will continue to use throughout their adult lives. This also promoted learners’ inclusion within the community, highlighting the positive contributions learners have made to their local community.
