Thornbeck College

Thornbeck College is an Independent Specialist College providing personalised programmes to autistic and neurodivergent individuals

Working together to inspire, support, celebrate and equip autistic and neurodivergent people to fulfil their potential in life.

On entry at Thornbeck College Connor expressed an interest in working in the motor vehicle industry. Thornbeck have supported Connor to make progress towards this aspiration through participating in a 1:1 experiential visit with a car detailing business and accessing a weekly work experience at Top Gear where he was able to develop a range of employability skills.

Following the completion of the experiential and weekly work experience Connor advised he wanted to gain further experience in this industry, and Thornbeck staff began the task of arranging further work experience working directly in a car dealership.

Connor began his new work placement with Mercedes Benz Sytner this week, based at their Teesside showroom and workshop. Connor was introduced to Jeremy Simpson (Managing director) and Glen Elson (Health and Safety Manager) who explained the business and the different roles within the showroom and workshop. Connor had a tour of the facility and met some of the staff team.

Connor then spent his first day shadowing and working with support in the service office. Connor participated in arranging face to face customer bookings, walk ins and other enquiries, data input and filling as well as liaising with the workshop for updates with services.

Connor will have the opportunity to work across the different departments at the showroom and has already expressed his excitement for the opportunity to work in the parts store.

Through accessing work experience, Connor will further develop his employability skills and transfer his existing skills too.
