Thornhill Park School

Thornhill Park School is an independent specialist school based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear for pupils aged 4-19

Our mission is to work together inspiring, supporting, celebrating and equipping autistic and neurodiverse children, young people and adults.

We try to provide a vast range of experiences for our learners at Thornhill Park School and Kiera is no different.  This school year Kiera has enjoyed work experience, helping the community, litter picking and showing awareness of road safety whilst out in the community.

Kiera visited Roker Beach to volunteer to litter pick and after putting on her personal protective equipment Kiera started to walk along the seafront picking up litter. When asked about it, Kiera said she was proud to be helping the environment and everyone should put their rubbish in the bin.

After an appeal at school, during which our pupils and staff showed great generosity, Kiera helped her community by delivering food and clothes to the Community Soup Kitchen in Sunderland. Kiera spoke to one of the volunteers at the food bank and said she was sad that some families are in this situation and to help them is a kind thing to do.

During these activities Kiera showed fantastic road safety awareness and was able to identify when vehicles were coming and waited until it was safe to cross the road with very little support from staff.

Over the last couple of weeks Kiera has also started work experience at Thornhill Park's Portland site. She has been helping with Sun class. Kiera has been helping the learners during a healthy eating lesson by supporting them to identify healthy and unhealthy foods.  She has also supported staff with any jobs they need completing.  When asked about her works experience Kiera said she enjoys helping staff and learners, she feels grown up, and she can’t wait to go back.
