Thornbeck College

Student Council

Thornbeck College is proud to announce the election of our new student council for this academic year!

The student council plays an important role in college life, taking on responsibilities such as representing their peers, sharing ideas to support positive change, and helping the college celebrate a wide range of events and achievements.

In preparation for the election, our learners worked on the following within their tutorials sessions. They:

  • Explored what it means to be part of the student council
  • Reflected on their individual strengths
  • Designed campaign posters to highlight why they would be ideal for the role
  • Voted for their peers who showed strong qualities and leadership potential

By taking part in the election process, learners have gained valuable insight into living in a democratic society, supporting the promotion of British Values such as democracy, mutual respect, and individual liberty. Throughout the process, they have also developed important skills in functional English, teamwork, and communication.

Please meet your new student council:

After the election, their first official task was to plan a coffee afternoon for parents and carers.

Council members worked together to:

  • Choose a date for the event
  • Create posters using their English and design skills.
  • Plan refreshments and bake snacks
  • Draft an invitation letter to be sent home to parents and carers

In planning this event, it not only encourages positive relationships between college and home but also gives our learners the opportunity to practice their organisational and interpersonal skills in a real-world setting.
