Volunteers Week

Learners at Thornbeck College have been making a meaningful impact across the North East after taking part in a wide range of volunteering activities during the first week of June, as part of the national Volunteers’ Week celebrations.

Volunteers’ Week, held annually from the 1^st – 7^th June, recognises and thanks the millions of people across the UK who dedicate their time and skills to supporting others without financial reward. The initiative highlights the vital role volunteers play in strengthening communities, supporting organisations, and improving lives.

At Thornbeck College, a specialist education provider for young people with learning difficulties and disabilities, learners embraced the opportunity to get involved, contributing their time to a variety of local organisations and community projects.

Throughout the week, learners volunteered in a diverse range of settings, gaining hands-on experience in real-world environments. Placements included Grannies Choice, where learners supported staff by stocking shelves and serving customers, and Spennymoor Youth and Community Centre, where they helped prepare breakfast, cook meals, clean facilities, and assist visitors.

Other learners contributed their time at a Baby Bank, helping to set up stalls and assist customers, while others were involved in services such as No.24 Day Service, New Warlands Farm, and a local community garden. Environmental efforts also formed part of the week’s activities, with learners taking part in litter picking to help maintain local green spaces.

Staff at Thornbeck College highlighted the importance of volunteering as a powerful tool for personal development. By taking part in these activities, learners were able to build essential employability and life skills that will support them in future education, training, and employment pathways.

Over the course of the week, learners developed key skills including communication, teamwork, customer service, and independence. For many, the experience also helped boost confidence, strengthen their sense of responsibility, and deepen their understanding of how they can positively contribute to society.

The experience also provided valuable insight into different workplace settings, enabling learners to explore their interests and better understand various job roles. These opportunities play a vital role in helping learners build readiness for future employment and ongoing volunteering.

Volunteers’ Week not only celebrates the contribution of individuals but also encourages more people to get involved in their communities. Thornbeck College hopes the success of this year’s activities will inspire continued engagement and highlight the importance of inclusive volunteering opportunities.
