Thornbeck College

Development of health and wellbeing curriculum

Thornbeck College has developed the health and wellbeing curriculum. Health and wellbeing is an important part of the curriculum as it provides learners with the knowledge and skills to live a healthy lifestyle.

Learners have done this in the following ways:

  • Wellbeing for Life, a service commissioned by Durham County Council, visited the college to deliver a workshop from their service Eatwise. Learners were able to gain further understanding about a balanced diet through looking at the eat-well plate, portion control and exploring the benefits of living a healthier lifestyle.
  • Throughout this term, learners have been accessing the community to utilise the local gym facilities, trying out spinning classes and equipment such as weights and treadmills.
  • In the second half of this term, a personal trainer will be accessing college to provide learners with the opportunity to try a “gentle” approach to exercise, in order to generate a new perspective on how exercise can be adapted to suit the abilities of each individual, rather than focusing only on conventional exercise.
  • Learners have also been given the fantastic opportunity to work with a football coach from the Foundation of Light, in order to develop skills within team sports and promote an active lifestyle, through a common interest amongst peers in football.

In taking part in these activities, learners are able to further develop their health and wellbeing, both through gaining greater understanding and participation. This supports independent living skills as it allows learners to form healthier habits within everyday life.
