Black History Month

Throughout the month of October learners have celebrated Black History Month. The theme this year was “standing Firm in Power and Pride” – To honour this, learners created a piece of artwork. Learners were given the prompts “I am proud of…” and “I feel powerful when…” on a blank silhouette, they then completed the sentences with their own ideas. For example, “I feel proud of my work”.

Learners participated in a range of activities to celebrate the event including:

·         “I feel proud of…” “I feel powerful when…” silhouette piece of art, contributed to by all learners

·         Matching celebrities to their achievements to showcase the achievements of black individuals

·         African style tie dye squares which were sewn together by learners to create a piece of art

·         Menu tasting opportunities including traditional recipes such as peach cobbler, banana pudding and jerk chicken.

The celebration of this event has supported learners’ community inclusion in a range of ways. It has allowed them to celebrate the achievements of others as well as their own. In addition, learners have increased their understanding of world events and their awareness of the importance of acceptance.
