Autism Acceptance

The North East Autism Society has been campaigning for Autism Acceptance since 2019. Working with autistic individuals, families, schools and businesses across the North East in a bid to change the narrative on how people view and understand autism. To mark the event learners participated in a range activities including:

  • Developing their understanding of Autism Acceptance during tutorial sessions by watching videos that shared real-life experiences of autistic individuals, including those of Cat Burns, a Brit Awards nominee. These videos helped learners gain insight into what life can be like for autistic people and encouraged discussion about acceptance and inclusion. During the sessions, learners also completed reflective activities, including identifying one word that describes who they are as individuals.
  • Participating in a spray-painting activity, where they created a visual representation of their chosen word on a board to express their identity. These boards were collected and displayed as part of the Acceptance Project, which brings together powerful artwork exploring themes of acceptance, inclusion, and how art can challenge harmful myths about autism.
  • Submitting alternative artwork as part of the Acceptance project
  • Engaging in a range of sensory activities, exploring a different sense each day. This included investigating sounds, visuals, touch, smells, and textures, enabling learners to identify their personal preferences and sensitivities. These activities supported learners in understanding sensory experiences and recognising that individuals may respond differently to sensory input.

Overall, learners developed a deeper understanding of Autism Acceptance through exposure to real-life experiences and creative expression. They also built awareness of sensory needs and preferences, while fostering empathy, self-understanding, and respect for individual differences.
