E-Safety Month

During February, learners at Thornbeck College actively engaged in a variety of e-Safety Month activities designed to enhance their understanding of online safety, responsible digital behaviour, and the potential risks associated with technology and social media. These activities provided meaningful opportunities for learners to develop essential digital literacy and safeguarding awareness skills that support their independence and wellbeing in both educational and community settings.

Participation in the e-Safety poster competition enabled learners to demonstrate their knowledge of online safety in a creative and accessible way. By designing posters, learners were able to reinforce key safety messages, reflect on their own online behaviours, and communicate important information to their peers. The voting process further promoted learner voice, decision-making skills, and engagement in a shared college initiative, fostering a sense of community and ownership.

Tutorial sessions focusing on the SMART Rules and online abuse significantly increased learners’ awareness of how to stay safe online, recognise unsafe situations, and understand how to seek help or report concerns. Learners developed a clearer understanding of personal boundaries, privacy, and respectful communication in digital environments, contributing to improved confidence when using the internet and social media platforms.

The social media experiment, which involved posting on the NEAS Facebook page and encouraging others to share and tag the post, provided a practical demonstration of how quickly information can spread online. This real-life activity helped learners to understand the permanence and reach of digital content, reinforcing the importance of thinking carefully before posting and considering the potential consequences of online actions.

In addition, researching the influence of Artificial Intelligence supported learners to develop awareness of emerging technologies and how AI can impact information, communication, and decision-making online. This activity encouraged critical thinking, curiosity, and discussion about the reliability of online content and the ethical use of technology.

Overall, these activities had a positive impact on learners by:

The e-Safety Month programme successfully embedded key safeguarding messages in an engaging and practical way, contributing to learners’ personal development and readiness for life in an increasingly digital world.
