World Mental Health Day at Thornbeck
Learners at Thornbeck College have been celebrating the run-up to World Mental Health Day on October 10th
Thornbeck College has recently transformed its former an old learning environment into a dedicated Sensory and Communication Hub, creating an innovative and personalised space designed to support learners on the college’s Sensory and Communication pathway.
The newly renovated room has been repurposed to provide a calm, adaptable and engaging environment where learners can access their curriculum in ways that reflect their individual needs, preferences and communication styles.
The development has been supported by a grant towards the purchase of specialist sensory equipment, helping to create a flexible space where learners can explore, interact, communicate and learn through a range of sensory experiences.
For learners on the Sensory and Communication pathway, traditional classroom environments can sometimes present barriers to engagement and participation. The new hub provides opportunities for staff to adapt activities and curriculum experiences, enabling learners to engage with learning in a way that is meaningful and accessible to them.
The space also provides opportunities for learners to make choices, express preferences and develop their confidence in communicating with others. This may involve using objects, visual supports or sensory experiences. By providing a supportive environment where learners can communicate in ways that work for them, the hub helps to promote greater independence and participation.
The transformation reflects Thornbeck College’s commitment to creating inclusive learning environments where every learner can participate and make progress, creating further opportunities to connect curriculum learning with learners’ individual interests and goals.
The project demonstrates the positive impact that investment in specialist resources and inclusive environments can have, helping to ensure that learners on the Sensory and Communication pathway have the tools, opportunities and support they need to thrive.
