Thornbeck College

Horticulture work experience

Thornbeck College’s Horticulture group visited Seaham Town Council to participate in an experiential workplace visit to provide them with opportunities to support them to make decision regarding future employment.

The group were shown around the depot site, where the maintenance team are based and were then shown the tools and equipment used to maintain areas such as parks, football pitches, crematoriums etc.

Each learner in the group participated in a task within the maintenance grounds using a range of tools such as leaf blowers, lawnmowers, strimmers and hedge trimmers to maintain an area on the site.

The visit supported learners to increase their understanding of the role, develop further knowledge in relation to a range of tools, equipment, and health and safety surrounding the role.

Learners were able to ask questions about what they would need going forward to work in horticulture and maintenance roles for a council in their area, enhancing their knowledge towards their own future aspirations.
