Life with Tourette syndrome ‘It’s not me – it’s Suzie’
For Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Peter Barron talks to a young Thornbeck College learner about her life with Tourette syndrome.
On Wednesday 12th February 2025, learners from Thornbeck College were provided with the fantastic opportunity of being flag bearers at the Sunderland v. Luton Town game at the Stadium of Light.
The Stadium of Light is the ninth-biggest football ground in England and is the home of the ‘Black Cats’. The students, who are SAFC Supporters, participated in activities including:
Sunderland romped to a 2-0 victory and the learners had a fantastic evening and were extremely grateful of the amazing experience they had been given – we would like to take this opportunity to thank AK Teaching Sunderland for arranging this. Marcus, a Thornbeck student, stated that the evening was “brilliant and I was on TV!”
Participating in this event has promoted learners’ personal development, inclusion within the community, as well as encouraged them to develop their social and communication skills. It has also promoted learners Functional English Skills, by supporting them to take and follow instructions from unfamiliar people, thus advancing their employability skills.
