Youth Skills Day
As part of Youth Skills Day, learners took part in Thornbeck’s Dragon’s Den, an enterprise challenge that encouraged learners to develop their creativity, communication and teamwork skills.

Baby bank
Thornbeck College baby bank has expanded to a new location. This is based at the Red Hall Community Centre in Darlington. Â Â
Learners prepared for the expansion of the baby bank by participating in a range of activities including:
- Locating a new venue
- Organising items including clothing and toys
- Making posters to advertise the event
- Distributing posters to the local community
- Buying essential supplies including nappies and wipes
- Setting up the venue prior to the event starting
The event took place on Tuesday 26th September and was a huge success – this will continue to run on a fortnightly basis. Learners engaged with members of the public and handed out essential items including nappies, wipes, food, clothes, toys and other larger items.
Participating in the event has supported learners to develop their inclusion within the community and actively contribute as local citizens. It has also promoted their use of functional English through communication with a range of both familiar and unfamiliar people, as well as their functional maths skills through the handling of donations and purchasing items.
Learners’ employability skills have also been enhanced by providing learners with a sheltered work-experience opportunity, where they have developed essential skills including health and safety and time management, ensuring that the baby bank was ready to commence at the advertised time.
