College's baby bank expands support across County Durham and Darlington

Thornbeck College’s Baby Bank has expanded, strengthening its role as a vital source of support for families across County Durham and Darlington. The initiative is uniquely operated by Thornbeck learners, who run the Baby Bank as part of their community‑based work experience placement—developing practical skills while making a meaningful difference to local families.

The Baby Bank now works in partnership with all five community midwife hubs within the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust (CDDFT), alongside maternity services at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Support has also extended into local community settings, including toddler groups at Ferryhill Sports & Education Centre and Red Hall Community Centre.

Further partnerships include Darlington Kinship Connect, a charity supporting foster and kinship care families, and the Building Stronger Families Service at Darlington Borough Council. The Baby Bank is also awaiting responses from the two labour wards within CDDFT to widen its reach even further.

To date, Thornbeck learners have directly supported 20 families, with many more accessing second‑hand clothing and toys through partner organisations.

The scale of items distributed reflects both the growing need and the dedication of the learners who manage the Baby Bank. Supplies provided so far include:

• 2,160 nappies
• 2,400 nappy sacks
• 71 packs of baby wipes
• 22 baby hats
• 44 pairs of scratch mittens
• 60 muslin cloths
• 20 cellular blankets
• 2 Moses baskets
• 74 bibs
• Plus numerous bodysuits, baby socks, and sanitary products

The project not only supports families during the crucial early stages of parenthood but also offers learners valuable real‑world experience in organisation, communication, and community engagement.
