Life with Tourette syndrome ‘It’s not me – it’s Suzie’
For Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Peter Barron talks to a young Thornbeck College learner about her life with Tourette syndrome.

Equality and Diversity Month
To celebrate Equality and Diversity Month learners at Thornbeck participated in a range of activities including:
- Engaging in discussion to identify what equality, diversity and inclusion means and identify the importance of embedding it within college and in the community
- Creating a ‘person cut out’ to represent themselves for the annual events display board to identify and celebrate individual differences
- Engaging in a range of games where each learner experienced what it could be like to live with one of the protected characteristics by wearing a blindfold to represent somebody who is partially sighted or blind, wearing a sling to represent somebody with a physical disability and caring for a baby to represent marriage and maternity rights
- Accessing Newton Aycliffe Town Centre to visit local facilities to see what they offered to support those with protected characteristics
- Accessing both the local leisure centre as well as Newton Aycliffe Youth Centre and finding the following: Fitness classes aimed at promoting activity for those 60 and over; clubs aimed at promoting mental health for all genders, and groups promoting inclusion to new parents (maternity) for both them and their new children to meet new people.
- Visiting the oriental museum to explore different cultures from around the world
- Donating items to the local food bank
Participating in the event has supported learners to develop their understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion and helps create a more respectful, harmonious, and innovative society by valuing each person’s unique identity and promoting a sense of belonging
