Thornhill Park School
Sixth formers tour recycling centre
Courtney, Zak and Vinnie, from sixth form at Thornhill Park School, attended a tour at the Wrekenton Recycling Centre. When they arrived, they were taken to the Visitor Education Centre and told what would happen during the visit, then given a hi-vis and a safety helmet each, to ensure their health and safety during the visit. The learners were told the maximum amount of waste that the centre could take a year, along with how they were able to weigh how much waste each truck contained as they entered the centre.
Courtney, Zak and Vinnie then were taken to the different skips which contained different materials, such as cardboard, hard plastic, general waste and small electronics, to name a few. It was explained that all skips are blue, unless it contains any electronics, then the skip is pink. As they visited each skip, it was explained to them how each material would be recycled.
Courtney asked if there had been any fires due to all the waste, to which Courtney, Zak and Vinnie were then told a story about a fire that had occurred three years prior that had started due to a battery being improperly recycled, which had sparked in the waste transfer building, leading to the building catching fire and burning down.
Vinnie asked how asbestos would be correctly disposed of, and where would the asbestos be taken for this. He was told they would need to be contacted to book a time slot, along with triple wrapping the asbestos.
Zak asked if they had ever found any illegal items in the skips. Zak was told they had, and they had also had visits from the police before to look for items that may have been involved in a crime they were investigating.
Courtney, Zak and Vinnie said they enjoyed the visit, and would like to return so they can tour the waste transfer building, since they were unable to on this visit. They also said they would like to visit the reused and recycled shop located in Sunderland.
