Thornhill Park School

Thornhill Park School is an independent specialist school based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear for pupils aged 4-19

Our mission is to work together inspiring, supporting, celebrating and equipping autistic and neurodiverse children, young people and adults.

Across the school, everybody learnt about the lunar calendar and Chinese New Year traditions.

Exploring Chinese Art and having Chinese New Year themed sensory lessons were some of our learner’s favourite ways of celebrating this month.

Post-14 students also engaged in Equality and Diversity lessons to raise awareness of discrimination against East Asian individuals and to understand what we can do to make sure everybody feels welcome and celebrated.

In Pre-14 a number of learners actively participated in a Chinese New Year sensory story where they were able to explore colours, textures, and different food all associated with year of the tiger.

On Chinese New Year Day, students fed cabbages to a previously created dragon, according to Chinese tradition. They also had the opportunity to try spring rolls and fortune cookies and were surprised by their predictions!

One of our highlights was the dragon parade: whilst Chinese music played, a dragon walked on Thornhill’s grounds, wishing everybody luck for the year ahead! Learners decorated classrooms in school in preparation for Chinese New Year.
