Shrove Tuesday, also commonly referred to as Pancake Day, is a celebration that's observed the day before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the first day of the Christian observance of Lent, a 40-day period of abstinence that precedes Easter.

To celebrate, learners in the catering team devised a survey to support them to ask their peers and staff to choose their favourite pancake toppings. Once they had identified the most popular choices they planned a shopping list and accessed a local supermarket to purchase the ingredients.

Once they had returned to the kitchen they prepared, cooked and served the pancakes. Learners were taught new Makaton signs linked to Pancake Day.

Celebrating Shrove Tuesday has supported learners to increase their understanding of celebrations relating to the Christian faith, supported the development of their functional skills and independent living skills whilst promoting community inclusion.
