This August, North East Autism Society's annual cycle challenge returns with a European flair, as we head onto the continent for the Twin Town Tour Twenty Twenty Two.

The T6 Challenge, as it's known for short, will see us visit the Twin Towns of places where NEAS has service provisions for autistic and neurodiverse people. These are:

Oberhausen - twinned with Middlesbrough
Mülheim an der Ruhr - twinned with Darlington
Essen - twinned with Sunderland
Wuppertal - twinned with South Tyneside
Mönchengladbach - twinned with North Tyneside

This is a six day challenge. The ferry will depart in the late afternoon on Thursday 25 August, landing in Ijmuden on Friday 26 August with the first day's cycling starting from the port. Two more days will follow, finishing in Amsterdam on Sunday 28 August. Monday 29 August will see a short 20 mile cycle back out to Ijmuden to catch the return ferry in the afternoon, before arriving back in North Shields on the morning of Tuesday 30 August.

The route

After arriving at the port of Ijmuden, Netherlands, we'll cycle Southeastwards past Amsterdam, through Arnhem and onto our first overnight halt in the German town of Wesel. Day two will see us continue on deeper into Germany before reaching and visiting our twin towns.

Firstly will be a stop in Oberhausen, before heading South to Mülheim an der Ruhr and Eastwards to Essen. From here, a small hill lies between us and Wuppertal, before we head West to Mönchengladbach and circle round to our second overnight halt in Venlo, just over the Netherlands border.

Day three will see us pick up the Rhine River again and follow it Northwest back up to Amsterdam, where our challenge will end. A short afternoon hop will see us head back to Ijmuden on the Monday to catch the ferry back to North Shields.

Estimated Route Distances:

Day 1: North Shields - Ijmuden N/A
Day 2: Ijmuden - Wesel 117 miles
Day 3: Wesel - Venlo 107 miles
Day 4: Venlo - Amsterdam 107 miles
Total Distance 331 miles
