Emsworth's newest Star Baker

One of Kelvin’s targets is to independently access the cookery room and make himself a snack or warm drink, following verbal or symbol instructions. Since moving from the Portland site to Emsworth, Kelvin had not yet used the cookery room, so staff asked if this was something he would like to do. Kelvin excitedly told staff that he would like to make rainbow cookies.

With staff support, Kelvin collected all the ingredients he needed and walked into the cookery room. Another of Kelvin’s targets is to access a less familiar area in school and complete an activity or task, so we were very proud to see him happily explore the cookery room and identify the equipment he needed to use.

Once ready, Kelvin washed his hands and then followed the symbol instructions, with staff support, to mix the ingredients together and make his cookie dough. Kelvin identified the shapes he wanted to cut his cookies into and counted the rainbow Smarties onto the dough. He then identified that he needed oven gloves to put the tray into the oven, found them in the drawer, and carefully placed the tray inside.

Kelvin waited patiently in the cookery room while the cookies baked. While waiting, he independently wrote in his literacy book, “I made cookies.” When the cookies were ready, Kelvin was excited to try one. After his first bite, he said, “They taste good!”
