Emergency Services

As part of the Independent Living Skills curriculum, learners have been supported to develop their knowledge of the emergency services – who they are, how they help and how to access support safely. Learners have been supported to participate in a range of activities including:

Fire Station Visit

• Learners were given a tour of the station 
• Were supported to utilise the hose alongside the practice tower 
• Were able to sit in the fire engine 
• Were supported to explore various tools and equipment utilised by the fire service
• Were able to learn more about how the fire service prepare for and respond to emergencies in the local community 

Police

Local PCSO Steven Kipling and a supporting sergeant visited the site to:

• Allow learners to explore the police van 
• Support learners in exploring various equipment 
• Allow learners the opportunity to ‘arrest’ a member of staff 
• PCSO Kipling then returned to college to deliver a presentation to learners and explain how the police service help to keep the local community safe 

Sheonagh Jones of the Great North Air Ambulance Service visited college to present to learners about what the service provides to the community and how it helps to save lives

Through practical activities, discussions and supported experiences learners have gained a clearer understanding of the vital role emergency services play In keeping communities safe
