Thornhill Park School

Thornhill Park School is an independent specialist school based in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear for pupils aged 4-19

Our mission is to work together inspiring, supporting, celebrating and equipping autistic and neurodiverse children, young people and adults.

The school is proud to have a long-standing, well-integrated student council where our learners are supported by specialist staff to aid effective communication and decision making.

Our Learner Voice surveys and tutorials help influence organisation, development and quality improvement. They also effectively demonstrate that the views of all learners are collected and acted upon.

A wide range of strategies are employed to gather learners’ views including satisfaction surveys, student council, talking mats, PCLPs, input from speech and language therapists, student representatives. Input from communication champions ensure that learners are supported with appropriate high and / or low tech AAC aids and strategies. This approach helps students with varying levels of communication to express themselves in relation to operational and strategic issues by increasing their ability to use a range of communication strategies.

School Council Representatives

The school has eight elected members representing all areas of school and they attend meetings on a monthly basis.

The following are examples of how school council has been used to improve the quality of the learning experience within school:

  • A recycling project has been set up across school
  • School council played an integral role in designing both of the playground areas.
  • School council also played an integral role in the design of the quad area for our younger learners.
  • School council have helped to set up several lunchtime clubs across school e.g. Drama club, Warhammer club etc
  • School council have helped to organise the Easter and Summer Fetes within school

We are looking forward to seeing what the student council achieve this year.
