Students of Thornhill Park School, aged from 6-19 years old, have been going green and volunteering this year with Durham Wildlife Trust.

They have helped conserve green spaces around Sunderland, developing and maintaining habitats for wildlife. They have been working to preserve our outdoor green spaces and to encourage more wildlife to move into areas around Sunderland.

A variety of businesses, schools and organisations have been working in partnership with Durham Wildlife Trust to try and achieve these goals, as part of a project called "My Wild Sunderland."

Over the weekend, Durham Wildlife trust held an open day and awards ceremony in order to reflect on a year of the project and commend those involved.

Laura Tumilty, teacher at Thornhill Park School, attended the award ceremony alongside student and volunteer, Skye Smith. Laura said:

We were honoured to pick up one of only five awards as recognition of the continued enthusiasm and hard work demonstrated by the pupils of Thornhill Park, and their commitment to engage with the natural world.
