First job in seven years thanks to ProgressNE

After seven years out of work, Lisa Watson felt a little daunted about starting a new job at Morrisons café in Morpeth.

But she says she “forgot to be nervous” after a few weeks in the role.

Lisa, 37, who is autistic, says: “Through talking to people, both staff and customers, my confidence has grown. I like the routine as well.”

Lisa got the job with the support of ProgressNE, an employability programme delivered by the North East Autism Society and Azure Charitable Enterprises.

She says: “ProgressNE was helpful, especially in how to express myself.

Lisa had previously worked at Azure Garden Centre in Cramlington and as a volunteer in a British Heart Foundation shop.

She hadn’t considered catering, but Morrisons were so impressed with her at interview that they offered her the choice of a replenishment role or a job in their café in Morpeth, Northumberland.

“It was something different and I thought I would try it to see if I liked it,” Lisa says. “They are training me on the job and I’ve completed the necessary online courses.”

Her tasks include serving food, replenishing stock, setting tables, cleaning, and dealing with customer inquiries. After more than a month on the job, she is enjoying it.

She says: “I enjoy meeting different people and having the support of my team when I need it. The manager is very supportive.
