Extended Services

Children who attend Thornhill Park School have the opportunity to take part in a range of different activities every week day evening between 3.15 and 6p.m. Our pupils can choose to come to come every day, once or twice a week, or just to go home at the end of the school day - whatever works best for the individual child and his or her family.

Our activities follow 5 different themes::

Communication and Sensory Activities.

We use fun activities to address the individual communication and sensory needs of the young people taking part. Of course, every participant has different needs and we work on specific development areas whilst accessing other resources and community provision.

In practice this means that the young people might really enjoy going for a walk, bouncing on a trampoline or even a trip round the shops, and probably won’t even notice that we’re supporting them to achieve a certain target or overcome a particular problem.

Creative Arts and Music.

Art isn’t all about sitting still, colouring in or cutting and sticking! Our sessions are based around dance, drama and music, but always with the emphasis on individual needs and preferences.

Some of the young people really enjoy creative activities – using their hands to make something.

Others, who prefer more energetic pursuits, may enjoy dancing, drama, role play. . .as with all our sessions we’ll follow their lead and make sure they have fun.

Sport, Adventure and the Natural Environment.

After a hard day at school it’s always good to get out into the great outdoors! We have loads of activities on offer including climbing, water sports, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, survival skills – you name it, we’ll probably give it a go!

Study Support with Intensive Learning and Teaching.

We offer one to one support to stretch every individual’s academic ability, focusing on specific learning outcomes and needs. This may be discussed with class teachers in order to identify areas where each young person could be supported with their learning. But, of course, our evening sessions are about having fun – so it’s our job to find exciting and enjoyable activities which will reinforce the progress made during the school day. Anyone fancy spotting colours or counting floats in the swimming pool?

Information Technology and Media.

IT plays a huge part in every young person’s life today, so our sessions give them the chance to learn new skills and try new gadgets. Film making and animation can keep some of us entertained for hours, whilst others may fancy golfing with the WII sport or just good old Sonic the Hedgehog.
