Thornhill Park School

Thornhill Park School was founded in 1980 by a group of parents whose children had autism spectrum disorder. They wanted to send their children to a school where the staff understood their needs and where each child would be helped to achieve his or her full potential. Since the 1980’s our school has become firmly established as a major regional and national resource. Today we can offer places for up to 91 children and young people. All children may also benefit from our 24 hour programme of care, when it is right for the individual child and their family.

Every child at Thornhill Park benefits from a highly individualised plan, designed to help them achieve their full potential. Our qualified and very experienced staff work closely with the children and young people to achieve a calm supportive atmosphere. We have respect for every student’s needs and allow them to work at their own pace. Every day we involve our students in meaningful activities and learning situations - giving each pupil the right opportunities to achieve a better quality of life.

Our school is currently housed in 3 sites in the City of Sunderland. Although our buildings have served us well to date, we are planning a new purpose built school with state of the art facilities for all our pupils. The new school will bring all of our educational facilities together onto one campus and will enable us to operate at the forefront of practice during the next decade and beyond.

Referrals to the school are made through each child’s local authority. However, parents and carers are always welcome to contact us with enquiries.
